I have xp proff on my laptop.have 2 drives c & d. want to install linux on d drive how to do it?

Get a distro (type) of any linux. restart your pc and set your BIOS to read from the CD drive of your laptop when booting. Restart your pc and put the cd in quickly. After a bit the installation wizard appears and you go through it until it talks about disk partions. Format your D drive and make partions for linux there. Continue with the wizard and make sure you make the bootloader program (lilo or grub) is installed on C drive. It should all work fine then. remember to reset your BIOS to load off the C drive when you finish the installation and on rebooting.

If you want to try out a distro without trouble then you can download a live CD that runs straight off the CD without installing anything on your harddisk but you need to set BIOS to read from the CD drive.
