How to boot linux(ubuntu), and format the c drive that contain win.xp and make my pc fully linux? i tried but?

Ok, here's what you're going to need to do. Stage 1: Format your entire hard drive. Stage 2: Partition the disk to your liking, so for this example, 50-50, half Windows (NTFS), half Linux (ext3), and a swap file which should be double your RAM. Stage 3: Install Windows XP on the NTFS partition. Stage 4: Install Ubuntu on the second partition (ext3). During the Ubuntu installation, it will mention something about the GRUB Bootloader, and it will detect the Windows XP Partition. Make sure that setups up correctly, and then you should be good to go. The GRUB bootloader should take over the MBR (Master Boot Record), because naturally Windows XP thinks it owns the machine, and GRUB needs to take the MBR over so it can let you choose which OS it wants.

You have to clean your PC once again and install the version of Linux to make ur PC fully Linuc.Thank You.
Reply:In some of the newer versions of Linux you can do a regular install with a Linux CD and it will wipe out the XP.





If you are having problems you can use the linux fdisk utility to repartition the hard drive and make a new partition for Linux then use the following command to format Linux partition using ext2fs on the new disk: mkfs.ext2 /dev/hda1


These utilities can be found on many Linux boot disks.





You may be after ext3 or another file system but by doing the above you at least wipe out any problems caused by XP with the exception of a Master Boot Record problem once in a blue moon. You can then use your boot media ( floppies/ CD/ etc ) to do a clean install of Linux.
